Panopto: Recording Guide for Students
This article equips learners to utilize Panopto’s web-based recording and editing interfaces for production of their own course videos.
Preparation
Video creation is most successful if you gather materials in advance. Consider your personal notes, any texts you will project onscreen, slides, websites, or visual aids. Open each file on your computer monitor. (Note: you may find use of a second monitor expedient.)
Next, launch Panopto’s online recording interface, which is called “Panopto Capture.”
From your course Canvas site’s left-side menu, find “Panopto Video” (about halfway down the menu).

From the Canvas-Panopto integration, choose “Create” from the bar across the top of the screen (in the middle).

Clicking “Create” will launch Panopto Capture, a distinctive screen with large green icons across the top. If this is your first time using Panopto Capture, a pop-up will likely appear, asking permission for the browser to access your equipment. Click “Allow” to continue.

It’s time to choose your settings for recording. For microphone choice, click “audio”.
Place the checkmark in the box that matches your preferred microphone. Then, select the “X” to dismiss the microphone selection popup screen.

Similarly, click the video icon to select your preferred camera for recording yourself.

As with the audio selection, a popup will allow you to place a check on the camera of your choice and then close out of that menu.

Lastly, click the “Plus” icon to choose the presentation materials to be included through a screen share.

Once the file selection popup opens, you may choose to share a tab, window, or entire screen using the tabs.

Repeat this process until each presentation item (file, browser window, illustration, etc.) has appeared on your Panopto screen. These will be your inputs. (See next section for more information on inputs.)

Recording
Just before recording, disable pop-up message notifications and close extraneous files to prevent confusion. Position any notes within easy reach. Then, click the large red button to begin recording.

When you have finished the presentation, click the square red button in the middle of the Panopto window.

Soon, the post-recording window will appear, featuring a progress bar that shows whether Panopto’s software has finished rendering the clip. (This usually requires a few minutes.)

If you choose to edit the video as soon as rendering is complete, simply click the “Edit” icon in the middle of the post-recording window. This will lead to Panopto’s web editing interface, as shown in the next section.
